Jamey Pappas's Recommended Reading
- Scaling the Secular City - J.P. Moreland
Description: In my opinion, the best general apologetics books
out there. The book covers a range of topics from the existence
of God, reliability of the NT, the resurrection, Christianity
and Science. It is middle range in terms of difficulty.
- Desiring God - John Piper
Description: What should be our motivation in serving
God, duty or desire for happiness and pleasure? Piper challenges
the commonly held notion that true service of God (and true
spirituality) should be motivated out of duty and obedience.
- Orthodoxy - G.K Chesterton
Description: A classic, and surprisingly entertaining,
look at the Christian Faith
- Mere Christianity - C.S Lewis
Description: Enough said! I can also highly recommend The
Problem of Pain and 'Til We Have Faces by Lewis. His autobiography,
Surprised by Joy also rules.
- Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire - Jim Cymbala
Description: A book about our dependence on God and crying
out to Him to work. More than a book on prayer.
- Changes that Heal - Henry Cloud
Description: This is not a chick book! Do you want to understand
why you behave the way you do, and what is the root of many
of the behaviors that drive you nuts. Read, reflect and discuss
this book with someone.
- The Theory of Knowledge - Moser, Mulder
and Trou
Description: A great introductory text on the theory of knowledge
(epistemology). What is knowledge? How do we know? What can
we know? How do we respond to skeptics?
- Reason in the Balance - Phillip Johnson
Description: Behind the theory of evolution stands a widely
accepted, highly influential, and rarely questioned world
view known as Naturalism. Johnson illustrates the power of
Naturalism in our culture and offers a challenge to the theory.
- Our Idea of God: An Introduction to Philosophical
Theology - Thomas V. Morris
Description: No, it's not written by the pastor of 1st Baptist
Church in SLO. Want to explore the nature of God at a deeper
level? This introductory, yet challenging book will help you
understand and appreciate the attributes of God.
- Love Your God with All Your Mind - J.P. Moreland
Description: A great book that gets you thinking about your
faith and starts you on the journey of developing your intellect
to further God's Kingdom using all that you are, including
your mind.
